Chestnut Mountain Resort, Galena
Just above the Mississippi, situated in scenic hills, Chestnut Mountain is a premier Illinois resort that for over 50 years has been offering 220 rolling acres with nineteen trails and a total vertical drop of 475 feet. Consistently rated as one of the top ten ski resorts in the Midwest by Ski Magazine, the resort boasts two quads, four triple chair lifts, and three surface lifts. Lines? What lines? They are (usually) non-existent. Runs range from beginner to black diamond. Plenty of thrills to keep the average snowboarder busy and challenged with a killer 7-acre Farside Terrain Park.
Tired after a day on the slopes? This fun snow resort has 100 slope side rooms in close proximity to an indoor pool, sauna and Jacuzzi. 2 onsite restaurants, Three Gables Lounge with frequent live music and an electronic game room give this destination a thumbs up for families. The small town, Midwestern charm and hospitality are evident here. Other fabulous restaurant, entertainment and accommodation choices are only 8 miles away in downtown Galena.
Writer's note: Chestnut Mountain has a newer addition, worth mentioning. The Sunset Grille is where the food is as spectacular as the 3-state views from the bluff! The restaurant features a 1,400 square foot outdoor dining deck and a "sunsational" menu. They create pizzas, sandwiches, delectable steaks and seafood. Reservations are required! The deck is perfect for sitting, relaxing and catching some sun. I normally order the Wedge Salad and bribe my server to let me order crab cakes, as well.
