The Baths - Virgin Gorda, BVI

In the February 2010 issue of Caribbean Travel + Life, I came across a stunning photo of a beach in Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands, called The Baths. A spectacular giant boulder assortment, the beach area hides secret rock paths and excellent places to explore. To have the area pretty much to yourself, it is wise to go at sunrise or sunset, as the cruise day-trippers often hit the spot mid-day.

The island is just east of Haiti and Puerto Rico, is only 8 1/2 miles long but is the 3rd largest in the chain. Sun worshippers enjoy the slower pace of life, sparkling turquoise waters and covet the many secluded beaches along the island, such as Handsome Bay, Savannah Bay or Big Trunk Bay. When visiting Virgin Gorda, The Bitter End Yacht Club is the place to stay. The Premium Beachfront Villas are great and when travelling with families up to 6, the private Estate House is the way to go.

Richard Branson\'s private tropical paradise is Necker Island, a 10-minute boatride away. In a class by itself, Necker Island is usually leased in total (room for 28 people, total), however there are a few times each year that singles, couples or families get to spend 3, 4 or 7 days there. Rates in October of 2009, started at around $12,500 for Family Week. This included one of the Bali houses; 3-days accomodations for a couple and 1 child. OMG! I think after looking at the website, that this is for sure the place to go with an extended family...
