Sun Protection

Sunscreen (also known as sun block or sun cream) is a lotion, gel, towellette or spray that absorbs and/or reflects the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays on exposed skin and therefore helps protect against sunburn.

The American Cancer Society, as well as many other medical organizations recommend the use of sunscreen because it helps prevent skin cancer. The use of sunscreens is a controversial topic for different reasons. Many sun creams do not block UVA radiation, which does not cause sunburn but can boost the rate of melanoma (skin cancer), so people using sunscreens may be getting too much UVA without even realizing it.

Furthermore, sunscreens block UVB rays, and if used time after time this can cause a Vitamin D deficiency. The next generation of sun block formulas addresses these issues and contains Helioplex -- designed to provide better protection against both UVA and UVB rays. A cutting edge example would be Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sun Block, 55 SPF, by Neutrogena®.
