DELAWARE STATE PARKS

Delaware state parks offer some very exciting things to do all year long. All the summer activities like hiking and boating and then the winter fun like cross-country skiing and ice skating. Summer temperatures can reach a high of 88 degrees and a low in the winter in the low 20s. Cabela’s or Bass Pro will have just what you will need to wear for your trip to the parks whether it’s to wear or maybe even the best fishing poles and gear.

Cape Henlopen State Park has 5,193 acres of land in Sussex County. The park provides a variety of recreational programs including natural history talks, outdoor concerts, seaside lessons on how to catch a fish and bird watching. The park has year round hiking and biking on a three mile paved trail looping the park. There is a World War II Observation Tower to climb to that has fabulous panoramic views or climb on top of a former military bunker to view the beautiful park’s six mile Atlantic coastline. The park also has a fishing pier that never closes as well as campgrounds. The beach at Herring Point is a popular surfing spot. There is a lot of fun to be had here at this picturesque state park.

Delaware Seashore State Park is on the Atlantic Ocean and west of Rehoboth Bay and Indian River Bay on 2,825 acres. There have been numerous changes in this area because of the fierce winds and strong ocean water slamming into the beach so in 1939 the Federal government constructed steel and stone jetties for stabilizing the inlet at the Indian River. Many visitors come here to share in the large variety of water related activities available here. The park is popular with the surfers because of the great ocean waves. The strong draw to the beach is the swimming and sunbathing and there are two areas on the beach that have modern bathhouses with showers.

The bathhouses also have snacks and rentals such as chairs, rafts and umbrellas. But you still need to bring all your personal items along with plenty of Coppertone, your head covering and a great pair of sunglasses like Polar Eyes. Check out the Indian River Marina for fishing gear or boating services you might need while here. Other water sports are found in the shallow bays like windsurfing and sailing.
