DermatologistsA dermatologist is a physician that is certified by the American Board of Dermatology (ABD) to treat diseases and conditions related to the skin, hair and nails. Anyone wanting to become a dermatologist must have graduated from an accredited medical or osteopathic school in the United States. There’s a requirement of completion of a first-year residency program of clinical training in either of these areas; internal medicine, general surgery, family practice, obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics or emergency medicine. The candidate needs to complete a 3-year accredited dermatology residency program with at least 75% of that time directly related to outpatient or inpatient dermatology patient care and completed within five years. This program should include the basic sciences including; allergy, anatomy, bacteriology, biochemistry, embryology, entomology, genetics, histology, immunology, molecular biology, mycology, oncology, parasitology, pathology, pharmacology, photobiology, physiology, serology, virology, dermatologic microbiology, dermatopathology and immunodermatology. Whew! Now that’s a mouth full!

Wait, there’s more, the candidate should acquire knowledge and competency in performing surgery, including laser surgery and many other procedures. Examinations are administered by the ABD after satisfactorily completing graduate education and post-graduate training. In order to maintain certified status, dermatologists must take a recertification examination every 10 years.

In my research, I came up with 52 dermatology schools, colleges and universities in North American. Just to name a few: Baylor College of Medicine, Brown University, Duke University, Indiana University, John Hopkins University, Loyola University, Medical College of Virginia and New York University.

Dermatology Physicians’ pay scale goes anywhere from $203,000 to $275,000 a year. Naturally, this depends on many different factors such as employer size, industry, employee credentials and years of experience.

Of course, our main concern is to make sure you heed the dermatologist’s advice and suntan safely by using the appropriate sunscreens or using sunless tanning lotions that are dermatologist recommended.

Grab that sunscreen, hat, sunglasses & get out in the sunshine & have a beautiful day!
