IST Wins Prestigious ADDY® Awards

FLINT, MI – The ADDY® Award is one of the most coveted honors in the field of visual and graphic design, and Island Sun Times recently won five of them!

The IST team is the proud to claim three Gold and two Silver 2010 ADDY® awards from the American Advertising Federation – Greater Flint. The first Gold level award for IST was in the Consumer or Trade Publication/Magazine/Self-Promotion category, for the 2009 Buyer’s Guide issue, designed by Jodee Settle (Production Director), Nicole Butterfield (Graphic/Web Design) and Melody Richmond (Graphic/Web Design). The publication also won a Silver award in the same category for the March 2009 cover design, created by Melody Richmond.

“Competing against some very talented designers and winning nationally-recognized awards gives me a reason to continue loving the field I’m in,” said Melody. “Knowing that my hard work and creativity are being admired and rewarded makes me more passionate about becoming the designer I’ve always strived to be.”

The other three ADDY Awards were won by Click Design Studio, a full-service graphic design company founded by IST Publisher Vince Lorraine and boasting many clients in the indoor tanning industry. A Gold award in the Advertising Industry/Self-Promotion/Mixed/Multiple Media Campaign was presented to the agency for its logo, website and advertisement designs created by IST Graphic/Web Designer, Nicole Butterfield. Click Design also won a Gold award in the Sales Promotion/Packaging/Campaign for product packaging designed by Nicole and Melody for a tanning lotion company. The two also received a Silver award in the Collateral Material/Special Event Material/Campaign category for a complete corporate identity designed for a local health professional.

“These are very important awards because they distinguish us among top design professionals in our industry,” said Nicole. “It also validates all of my hard work and diligent efforts within the design community.” Nicole and Melody accepted the awards on behalf of IST and Click Design Studio at an award ceremony held on February 26, which also was attended by members of the magazine staff.


Vince Lorraine is extremely pleased with both the efforts of his staff, and the recognition of their talents. “Fourteen years ago, I started this magazine with the intention of creating the premiere publication for the indoor tanning industry,” said Vince. “Winning this many ADDY Awards is definitely an honor, and I believe this acknowledgment secures our position as a world class publication. These accomplishments are in step with our plan to take our magazine worldwide. All I can say is ‘Stay tuned’ for many more great things from us!”

This isn’t the first time IST has earned prestigious ADDY recognition – the publication was honored in 2009 with two Silver ADDY Awards. The winning pieces, designed by Jodee Settle, were submitted in the Consumer/Trade Publication, Full Page/Four Color category, and a tanning product promotional piece submitted in the Collateral Material/Brochure/Four Color category. IST was also honored with a 2004 Bronze ADDY Award in the Collateral Material (cover) – Magazine or Book category for the publication’s December 2003 cover.

With over 60,000 annual entries, the ADDY Awards are the world’s largest and arguably toughest advertising competition. Sponsored by the American Advertising Federation (AAF), the ADDYs represent the true spirit of creative excellence by recognizing all forms of advertising from all media types, and entrants of all levels from anywhere in the world.

IST Goes Canadian!

Now Reaching the Great Tan North

For the past 13 years, Island Sun Times’ ample content and gorgeous covers have become iconic in the American tanning industry. With the publication now being delivered to Canadian salon professionals, America’s favorite tanning mag has become the No. 1 indoor tanning trade publication in all of North America!

Distributing Island Sun Times to Canadian tanning professionals has been a long-term goal of IST Publisher Vince Lorraine. Over the years, he’s received hundreds of requests from industry veterans in the Great Tan North to produce a Canadian tanning publication. “After more than 18 months of research and talking to many tanning professionals, I decided that rather than create a separate publication for the Canadian market, I would provide Island Sun Times to tanning professionals there,” said Vince. “Today, Canadian and American tanning manufacturers and distributors trade freely across the border, they share ideas and concepts at industry trade events, and people in Canada tan for the same reasons many Americans do. So, it made more sense to provide Canadian tanning pros with complete issues of IST, which is already our industry’s leading source for news and information.”

Despite the commonality between the Canadian and American tanning industries, Vince realized the importance of adding Canadian coverage to his publication. “Beginning with our March issue, IST will have a special section dedicated to the Canadian market,” he said. “This will feature versions of our many popular and well-read articles, such as Company Profiles and Salon Spotlights, highlighting Canadian tanning professionals and businesses. We’re sure that this added material – along with the rest of IST’s award-winning content – will provide tanning pros in Canada with all the news and information they need to help them operate their businesses more efficiently and effectively, as well as offer the most up-to-date news from this industry.”

Currently, IST has more than 3,200 Canadian subscribers, and these tanning pros have already received the January 2010 Buyer’s Guide issue – a whopping 337 pages! – as their official introduction to the magazine. “This makes IST the largest-ever tanning trade publication to be shipped into Canada!” he exclaimed.

Reaching out to Canada, Vince says, is one part of his plan to cement IST as the world’s most read tanning publication. “Thirteen years ago, I saw the need in this industry for a publication that provided the news and information salon owners like myself would find educational, informative and entertaining,” he said. “In February of 1997, IST was born, and over the years, the magazine has continued to evolve and improve. We invite everyone in the industry to join us as we head into the future, because there will be many more exciting things to come!”

Vince Lorraine, a longtime resident of Michigan is the owner and publisher of Island Sun Times, as well as 6 other magazines. He started his tanning salon empire back in the late 1970’s with $5,000 start up cash and 1 employee. Now he manages one of the largest industry franchise corporations in the state of Michigan with 18 salons and more on the way. Vince started the publication (both in print and online) back in 1996 to help provide tanning salon professionals with current industry news, education and ideas to help them successfully grow their business. Lorraine, born and raised in Genesee County, came from a modest upbringing in Flint.  He graduated from Kearsley High School.  He went on to earn his degree from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor in Finance. Lorraine started his first business at age 19 while attending college.

Lorraine began his business enterprises in the late 1970's with $5000 and one employee.  He borrowed another $5000 just to get things started.  Today, he is a Publisher of 7 monthly magazines and one of the largest industry franchise corporations in the state of Michigan.  He employs nearly 100 local citizens and has grown his publishing business model throughout the United States.

Lorraine has proudly served on the Board of Directors and Finance Committee for the Flint Institute of Music for many years. In addition, he has been an active supporter of the Genesee County Food Bank, Whaley Children's Center, Adopt-A-Pet, and Project Graduation efforts throughout Genesee County.

Vince, Sherron and their daughter, Courtney reside in Fenton Township and worship at Faith Tabernacle in Burton, MI.
