Skiing & Snowboarding | Connecticut | USA | Suntan fun in the Snow

Ski Sundown, New Hartford

A 1st timer’s ski/board package here is $74 and includes a full day lift ticket, equipment rental and 1 ½ hour group lesson to teach the fundamentals of skiing. The main base lodge has plenty of space for dining (and resting!) with huge windows overlooking our base area. Inside the lodge you'll find our Welcome Center, Snow Sports School, two self-serve food areas, bar and lounge, restrooms, ATM machine, coin operated lockers and free cubicles for personal belongings. Wi-Fi access is also available throughout the building.

New Hartford is nestled in the foothills of the Berkshires and winding through the town is the scenic Farmington River. No matter what the season, this beautiful valley offers fun in the sun galore, including canoeing, tubing, and year-round trophy trout fishing.

Writer’s note: In nearby Canton is a great wood-fired pizza place, called Flatbread Company. With the freshest local & organic ingredients available, this pizza company is probably one of the few anywhere to use spring water, organic flour, kosher salt and real cake yeast to make pizza dough. Their sauce is even homemade in a cauldron that sits in the wood-fired oven. The “Coevolution” is my favorite on the menu with kalamata olives, fresh rosemary, oven-roasted red peppers, goat cheese, mozzarella, garlic and herbs.

 Woodbury Ski Area, Woodbury

It’s “Snow Much Fun” here! This year-round ski area is one of my absolute favorite places in the wintertime. All the snow sports are available for you, including: skiing, snow tubing, snowboarding, cross country skiing and even skateboarding. The summit elevation here is about 850 feet. Woodbury West has a double chair to the top, a magic carpet lift, handle tow and rope tow. Woodbury East has a magic carpet and a handle tow to the summit and this is the side of the mountain where you can choose from a DOZEN snow tube trails. A mere 90 minutes NYC, this is the largest snow tubing park in New England. It is also a snowboarders' paradise with plenty of trails, jumps, rails, spines. Adults (ages 12 and up) pay $39.00 for a full day (8 hr) lift ticket. Children under 5 are $12 and there is a discounted rate of $22.00, if you are military or a senior. All day on the snow tubes will cost you $44, all ages. Helmets, gloves, jackets, goggles and hats are even available to rent here, along with a complete line of snowboarding equipment & downhill/cross country ski gear. Woodbury offers all different type and skill level lessons, including an opportunity to learn from a "great". Instruction by Olympic Athlete Rod Taylor (1 hour) is only $160!

Writer’s note: The sun decks they have for watching the hill and catching some rays is fantastic for people-watching! Paying cash will save you money here; they have slightly higher rates for credit cards. Another cool item to mention is that Woodbury was the first ski area in the east to have snow bikes for rent! These are the hottest item to hit the slopes, though I’ll admit, I haven’t tried them. You must pay for a mandatory lesson with an instructor first. You should go early and “get your sun on”, but Woodbury is also alive at night, with lit trails after the sun goes down until 10:00pm.
