Skiing & Snowboarding | Idaho | USA | Suntan fun in the Snow

Sun Valley is sometimes called the “American Shangri-La” and has been a primo ski resort in the United States since 1936. It was the dream of Union Pacific Railroad chairman Averrell Harriman who purchased 4,300 acres to create a place where “your eyes should pop open” and everything that you wish should be provided. You arrive on Horizon Air or SkyWest into Friedman Memorial Airport or you can catch the Sun Valley Stages from the Boise Airport. There is always the option of renting a car from Avis in most gateway cities and dropping it no charge at the Sun Valley Resort. Sun Valley is a complete walk around village with free bus transportation available. Mountain Rides Transportation Authority is there to provide for touring needs outside the village. The Sun Valley Lodge was built in 1936 and has 6 room categories to choose from including a Family Suite. The Sun Valley Inn was opened in 1937 with 109 rooms including 4 Inn Apartments. The Deluxe Lodge Condominiums from studio to 4 bedrooms or perhaps the ambiance of the Cottages is more your style ranging from 1 to 5 bedrooms.

The shopping/dining areas are known as day lodges and there are four: Warm Springs Lodge, Seattle Ridge Lodge, River Ridge Lodge (a mini village) and Dollar Mountain Lodge which is more children oriented. You can use the three pools and two Fitness Centers year round. There are a variety of lift passes available; even one for college students but you must have a valid college ID. The number and variety of SnowSports schools will help those whether new or experienced. The Nordic/Snowshoe Center offers instruction as well as fun activities for those who are interested. Haven’t any idea what you need for skiing? The staff at Pete Lanes Mountain Sports; which is located in all the lodges except Seattle Ridge, will assist you in deciding between Head USA and Salomon for all your winter activity needs.

After a day of activities maybe checking out the Sun Valley Salon and Spa is your pleasure. Check out the Opera House for movies nightly or try a little bowling in the lower level of the Sun Valley Lodge. There are several lounges for your nighttime entertainment. How about watching the ice show or try some skating yourself? There is just so much to see and do even if you are not the skier in the family.
