South Padre Island- Spring Break in Texas

South Padre Island is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico and the Laguna Madre Bay, and the only link to the mainland is the 2 1/2 mile Queen Isabella Memorial Bridge. The 34 mile-long barrier reef is about a 1/2 mile at its widest point and has about 5,000 inhabitants and about one million visitors annually. Experience the awesome wide beaches of this beautiful Texas island with the adventure of Mexico just an hour away. South Padre Island has a sub-tropical climate with an average temperature in the winter months of 65 degrees. The summers are breezy and have an average temperature of 82 degrees, but the best news is that there is an average of 253 days of beautiful sunshine a year.

Sunny, warm South Padre Island is one of the top predetermined Spring Break destinations and attracts many students from all over the country. The one and two man craft manufactured by Wave Runner, Jet Ski, or Sea-Doo (commonly known as jet skis) are the most popular of all water sports on the island. On the beach, aside from sun tanning to get that perfect tan, is volleyball and personal games. Many people enjoy fishing on Padre Island as well as dolphin watching. There are many recreational activities here such as large fishing tournaments as well as Ladies Kingfish Tournament, Hooters Tournament, Redfish Rodeo and many more. The busy community is abundant with retail shops, resort hotels, condominiums and restaurants. The Island restaurants allow wonderful cooking aromas and lively music to escape out into the atmosphere of the town in order to entice customers into their premises.

In 1997, the Island evoked a “tie” ordinance as it deemed the Island’s welfare was at stake. First offenders are given a written warning notice (along with a free South Padre Island t-shirt) and second offenders are fined the cost of a fine silk tie! So Hawaiian shirts and colorful flip flops are the norm when walking down the boulevard. Even though the Island has drawn the business people with their new and creative Convention Centre, all attendees are encouraged to dress in informal clothing only. It is now one of the fastest growing meeting and convention destinations in the Southwest.

There is so much to do while at South Padre Island! Aside from the favorite pastime of acquiring the wonderful suntan on the beautiful white sandy beaches, there is windsurfing, surfing, skiing or horseback riding. Soar through the air parasailing and soak up the breathtaking views of the Island. The Dolphin and Nature Research Center provides hands-on experiences with the water’s inhabitants.
